EatinEatOut : Holiday 2012
WWW.EATINEATOUT.CA 121 All of the wines were quite good, but I loved the Kay-Shrah (very cute names), a fruit forward wine with nice aromas of lavender, pepper anise, cherry and raspberry. A popular Rhone style grape known for it's soft tannins and longer linger of red berry fruits and spicy character. This is a wonderful wine to sip with or without a meal. On the road again further south past Penticton and Oakanagan Falls to the town of Oliver. This area is the northern- most tip of the northern most desert in the world; the Sonora Desert. Summers are generally very hot with July and August being warmer than Napa Valley, but the evenings are markedly cooler. Here you will find the amazing Tinhorn Creek Winery. Just a young winery, only 20 years, this 150 acres is producing stunning wines! I can’t say enough about the wonderful Oldfield Series Merlot 2009 I have tasted several times. This is a blend of Cab Franc and a bit of Syrah making this a truly wonderful Merlot. On to the final stop on our tour in the town of Osoyoos, at LaStella. This is a small winery with only 50 acres focused on practicing low input viticulture and deficit irrigation. Small yield, big flavour. Try the Vivace 2011 Pinot Grigio with citrus, pear and apple notes. This wine would be perfect paired with rich sauces and buttery seafood dishes. The Oakanagan Valley is a truly magical place to visit whether you are a wine lover or not.
